Acer Aspire 5942G-524G64Bn 15.6in Notebook
March 9, 2010 | Acer, Notebook | 2 CommentsBlu-ray is far from being a ubiquitous feature on laptops, but Toshiba has finally understood that any “mobile multimedia computer” Should be standard. Acer has time he has proposed in its range and the Acer Aspire 5942G (524G64Bn), machine 15.6in desktop replacement, is his latest effort. It also packs a new laptop processors Intel Core i5 which, among other things, gives a line 940 pounds heavy price.

As always with Acer, however, the 5942G is an excellent once you tot up all the features. Notwithstanding the Intel Core processor i5-520M two hearts starting at a brisk 2.4 GHz – and the Blu-Ray, it also offers a very high capacity of 640 GB HDD, 4 GB of 1066 MHz DDR3 RAM and a decent ATI Mobility Radeon 5650 graphics card with 1GB of dedicated memory.
There are more too. Dolby Home Theater audio processing is included, as well as Gigabit Ethernet, Wireless-N Wi-Fi and Bluetooth 2.1 + EDR. You can even point the way to the mobile of the moment: a backlit keyboard. Add a fingerprint reader, HDMI and some excellent connectivity options and 5942G seeks to provide unparalleled value to the specification.
It is not without its compromises, mind. With a Blu-Ray you get a fairly standard screen 1366 x 768 resolution. Acer is trying to improve with what he calls “CineBoost Color Engine”, but it is the very definition of a “showroom” feature. Although he did not “primary color boost” to create a artificial dynamic appearance, it is the loss of any detail at both ends and dark scale. Fortunately, it can easily be disabled via a touch-sensitive button on the bezel, and also is useful on / off button for the entire screen.
Neither this design is a marvel. His combination of cover near Black, a little blue and glossy black highlights breaks little new, while the mish-mash of different materials and unsightly seams is fairly typical approach to design an acer laptop. This is far from being an ugly machine, however, and Acer can be commended for using less of the plastic shiny fear that people like Toshiba or HP. [via trustedreviews]
