March 10, 2010 | Acer, Notebook | Comments OffDespite being “Brand New”, Intel’s Pine Trail Atom platform, which does not improve too much on its predecessor in terms of functionality. So while technically new, we are always looking at netbooks each manufacturer clones that are more or less from each other.
This is particularly true of the Acer Aspire One 532H because it is literally engineering the same DNA as the S2 Packard Bell Dot, we reviewed recently. Of course this makes sense as PB is now a subsidiary of Acer, so let’s see how the two netbooks differ from each other. Given the success of Acer on this market, behind Acer Aspire One is one of the best selling models of the first generation, the 532H has a little height and in terms of looks marry. Our model, wearing a black cover with bright red spots or subtle, looks rather fetching, if it does pick up fingerprints easily. As Ruby Red, One should be available with Sapphire Blue Pearl and Silver options.
Opening up the machine, we are greeted with a glossy black interior mostly red with some chrome highlights to ensure consistency with the lid. Thank you to some subtle changes, it’s a much more attractive than the S2 Dot. Firstly, we prefer the color system, which is more complementary. This hinge projection was also changed, with the hinge edges now cast in the same form, it’s less embarrassing. Our proximity to bone of contention is the multi-touch touchpad. It has the same shape and size of the fine example found on the Packard Bell netbook, and it is equally sensitive, but here dotted texture is just a little too hard for comfort – almost like rubbing your finger along the sandpaper low.
Connectivity is also identical to his cousin, and even most other netbooks, either this generation or the last. This means that you get a disappointing selection of three USB ports, microphone and headphone jacks, an Ethernet port, memory card reader and a VGA analog video. [via trustedreviews]
