Acer beTouch E101 2 Megapixel Camera Smartphone

A few weeks ago we reviewed Acer NeoTouch S200, its latest high-end camera that features a ferociously fast 1GHz processor and screen resolution. The E101, however, sits at the other end of the wide range of new firm establishment of smartphones.

Certainly in terms of looks, the E101 does not relieve the air of a combined budget. Sure the body is made of plastic and does not feel as robust as the iPhone or the Nokia E52, but outside of the battery cover is slightly fragile indeed very well built. It measures 113 x 56 x 12.8mm and weighs 118g, it is rather more elegant, too, thanks to its sleek and angular, glossy black finish. And we love how it’s not laden with unnecessary buttons as some of the previous models in the range of Acer. On the latter, you simply get a power button at the top, a volume rocker switch and the lock on the left side and a button to the humble 2 megapixel camera on the right side. There’s even a stylus tucked away along the left side.

This is all fairly standard stuff, but the controls on the front is a sharp change from the norm. Instead of the usual four-WAY D-pad, the E101 has a touch wheel. This acts much like the touch wheel on the iPod Classic, so your finger slides around it goes up and down through the various menus. And as is also clickable, you can use it as a standard four-way D-pad if you want. Overall, we believe that the touch wheel works very well and is particularly useful when you try to navigate the menus with one hand. With the wheel there are four buttons usual Windows phone: Home, rear and two programmable buttons. Although these look like the first touch buttons, they are in fact traditional buttons, but as they are very sensitive not a problem.

Acer has kitted the handset with Qualcomm MSM 7225 processor is clocked at 528MHz. It is similar to that HTC processors used in Windows and Android phones during the past year or so. While it is obviously not in the same league as the CPU 1GHz Snap Dragon Acer S200 uses the high end, this is no exception either and the handset felt cheerful enough to use. On the memory front, there are 256 or RAM and 512 MB ROM. Naturally, you can also add more storage space by sliding in a microSD card down the slot hidden behind a small plastic flap on the right side of the phone. [via trustedreviews]
