Acer neoTouch P300 Sliding QWERTY Smartphone

NeoTouch the P300 is a smartphone with a sliding QWERTY keyboard that runs the operating system Microsoft Windows Phone (OS). As such, it goes against the likes of Samsung Omnia and HTC Touch Pro Pro2 impressive. However, it undermines both models in terms of price, so we wanted to see how it performed.

The P300 feels much thinner and lighter than the Omnia Pro rather stocky, and its design is very attractive too the metal strip that runs around the edge of the phone really complete the glossy black finish. Acer has added substantially a standard headphone jack on top, next to the mini-USB port and microSD card reader are hidden behind a plastic flap. However, the construction of the network quality of the device does not feel nearly as good as the HTC Touch Pro2.

For example, the battery cover is a “tad plastic and the sliding mechanism does not feel as smooth as it does on the Samsung and HTC models. In addition, the keys are covered with a shiny membrane that makes them feel very sticky to use. There is not much travel in each key and the layout is too poor. The keys are arranged in four rows so the keys are shared with the number of the top row of letters, but worse is the fact that the common punctuation marks such as periods and commas, must be accessible via the function key.

As Acer P400, this handset works on Windows Phone 6.5.3, which is the latest official version of the operating system (although there were leaks of version 6.5.5). The update is designed to make the OS more finger-friendly and, therefore, one of the biggest changes is a new tape that is at the bottom of the screen and contains a number of touch controls. For example, the start button has been moved from the top of the screen at that tape again and there are also many contextual buttons that appear here also. If you’re on the Today screen, for example, a button appears on the tape to take you directly to your contacts and you are in an open application on the exit button is now on this tape too. It helps to make Windows a bit more user friendly Phone, but the OS still trails far behind the iPhone or Android operating system in terms of overall user experience.

The 6.5.3 update also adds some other features, including support for email thread and the ability to drag and drop icons in the Start menu. This is simple as you just press and hold the icon until it moves slightly upwards to show you that he is ready to reposition itself. Then just drag it to the new location, let go and it falls perfectly into place. A further improvement is welcome at a significantly faster page rendering in Internet Explorer. The handset also has limited support Flash. This works great for single events, but the videos play at the frame rate is so low that it is almost unwatchable and the handset also become very insensitive. Acer has also added some additional applications including a YouTube video player at hand, as well as applications for Flickr, Facebook and Blogger. [via trustedreviews]
