April 30, 2009 | Component, Computer, Electronics, Hardware | Comments OffAdvanced Micro Devices (AMD) announced yesterday they are to launch an update to the Opteron server chip road map, in which they hope will attract customers from Intel. The new processor called Istanbul is almost the same as Intel’s current Xeon, since it uses 45-nanometer manufacturing process, but they offer better value for money and will be ready by 2010.

Information Week also tell us that AMD plans to launch eight to 12-nm 45-core processor code-named Magny-Cours in 2011, they also plan to launch 32-nm 12 – to 16-core chip code-named Interlagos. AMD seems that his love of race tracks, maybe it has something to do with them are authors of the Ferrari Formula 1 team.
Both Magny-Cours and Interlagos is only the code, the official name is the Opteron 6000 series. These new AMD processors will run on a new platform, which was code-named Maranello, just to point out is when the Ferrari F1 team is based. [ via product-reviews ]
