Asus K52JC Candidate Technology Notebook
August 3, 2010 | Others | Comments OffEarlier this year NVIDIA announced a new technology rather cool. This is called Optimus and Nvidia graphics he finally switching, where a laptop can choose between integrated graphics (for better battery life) and a dedicated chip (for better performance), a dominant characteristic. How? By doing this automatically on the fly, and no user intervention required. We waited patiently for laptops Optimus to go on sale today, and the K52JC Asus is the first to land in our labs.

If you are interested in the nitty gritty of Optimus, it is worthwhile taking a look at our Guide Nvidia Optimus. We will focus on K52JC, however, and indeed this is not the most obvious candidate for the technology. With a screen of 15.6 inches and weighs 2.5 kg, this is not exactly portable, which makes the power savings potential of something diminishing returns. It is akin to a hybrid Bugatti Veyron.
However, if Optimus enhances battery life a bit and keeps the system running coolly and quietly, then he does something good. Also doing something good is the 2.26 GHz Intel Core i5 processor that powers the K52JC processor, which showed a performer with extensively in the past. It is supported by an abundant 4GB RAM, 1GB Nvidia GeForce 310M and a dedicated graphics card offers the possibility of performance. For storage you get a 500 GB hard drive, while the Wireless N Wi-Fi and Bluetooth 2.1 to support wireless connectivity.
As a design is actually rather nice K52JC. His brilliant dark brown cap and brown textured insides form a good alliance with the gloss black bezel, and Asus does not seek to more elaborate as some manufacturers. He will never win an award for the design and 34.5mm thick, it is a little on the crunchy side, but not embarrass you with this sticky.
For most, it is a well built machine, too. We found no signs badly adjusted decline, and the hinge action on the screen is smooth, but safe. Putting pressure on the screen do not convey much to the display is, which is always a good sign. In addition, ASUS offers a two year warranty on all its laptops, which adds some value to the machine and some peace of mind.
A somewhat disappointing the K52JC is its connectivity. It has all the basics, including HDMI, VGA and three USB ports but it does not extend much beyond these. Therefore there is no eSATA, no waiting for USB charging, and no ExpressCard slot. It severely limits the options for connecting external storage devices fast as you can not use eSATA and there are no options for adding an ExpressCard module that expansion. [via trustedreviews]
