Canon PowerShot A3100 IS Digital Camera

These days but most of these amateur photographers have graduated to a Canon G11 or S90, or moved to a digital SLR now affordable. It seems there is simply not much demand for cheap but versatile compact manual more, and if the venerable A-series has been reduced to a handful of compact low cost for point-and-shoot end of consumer market. Only the A1100 still has a viewfinder, and not of them are equipped with manual exposure controls.

The current model of the Upper Series is it PowerShot A3100 IS, a compact 12.1-megapixels with a 4x optical zoom, 2.7 inch screen and optical image stabilization. It’s a pretty basic camera, and about as close to the average than anything on the market. The body is made of plastic, and is available in red, silver or blue version shown here. Unlike previous models of the Series AA-powered it has a rechargeable lithium-ion, and therefore it is much more compact and lighter than most previous models, measuring 97.2 x 58.2 x 28.1mm and weighs 155g with battery and memory card.

The construction of the network of good quality, with a tight fit between panels and not cracking embarrassing hurry. The semi-matte finish is attractive, easy to grasp and scratch resistant as well. The battery cover is a little fragile, with a plastic hinge and a tendency to pop open with little provocation, but at least the tripod bush is metal. The shape of the body includes a light push on the right end which provides a fairly firm grip and comfortable and controls are large, well presented and very clearly labeled. I would not go as far as to recommend to all those whose vision is limited or manual dexterity, but is much less fiddly than most ultra-compact. [via trustedreviews]
