HP PSC 1200 Professional Machine Printer

I can not be alone in my use of Windows Server 2000 for my ‘desktop’ operating system. No, this is not common, but I am sure he is much more frequent as Hewlett Packard would have us believe. With Windows Server 2000 allows me to store local copies of all the many websites I work and access them as separate sites on the same computer using host headers. Windows 2000 Professional does not have the same scope of control. Does home-based businesses never need this type of functionality? Considering the most common technology-related business at home web development, it is difficult for me to accept that they would not.

In a recent discussion of support, I was told that Windows 2000 has been quite supported by the HP PSC 1200 Printer Series. Yet, no matter what I tried, I just could not do it to install when you are connected directly to the computer. No matter that I had been using it for 7 months on the network where it was previously installed on a Windows 2000 Professional machine.

After trying the CD-based installation, downloading Web package driver twice, and try to use the automated web-based installation, I am still no closer to ‘with my HP PSC 1200 directly from my own computer. Speaking to Tech Support I was informed that “the solution is to use the HP Deskjet 550C drivers from the Windows 2000 Server version was not in fact supported.

The problem with this solution, of course, is that it limits the “printer / scanner / copier” you have purchased a printer / copier. “This must be a solution acceptable to anyone. The support staff did not even offer other alternatives until I made it clear that the solution he offered was simply unacceptable. Having worked in the technology industry as long as I have, I am sure that is their modus operandi, so before you decide to run to Circuit City to buy a new printer, I’m the real solution here for you.
