JVC DLA-HD550 D-ILA Digital Projector
June 30, 2010 | Digital Projector, Display | Comments OffHaving already seen and JVC HD950 projector salivated more upscale, we do not mind admitting that we’re actually quite excited by the arrival on our test benches the DLA-HD550. JVC’s new model for entry-level, the benefit we hope the high performance standards we expect from the brand’s exclusive projection technology D-ILA/optical wire grid a surprisingly aggressive price of just £ 2,995.

First impressions of the HD550 does not indicate that this will let us down. In fact, with its glossy black body stretched and vaguely elliptical shape is almost identical to his brother HD950 £ 5,675. Although the difference of the HD950, the HD550 is available in a white finish, too.
The outward similarities at first to extend its connections, too. For the same two sports HDMIs, the same component video input, the same S-Video and composite video inputs, and the same RS-232C for system integration. Then, it seems, however, there are some potentially important missing. For there is neither the 12V trigger output or input analog D-Sub PC available on the HD950.
We are aware that JVC needs to try to provide reasons for people to consider going up to HD950, but removing the PC connection, in particular, seem a bit mean really. Especially since the PC ports D-Sub are worn by all other video projector, we can think of right now some including costs less than the HD550.
PC users can, of course, feeds into the computer via the HD550 HDMIs, but even a semi-serious user of the HD550 will probably HDMIs already allocated to other sources. Turning our attention to the internal specifications of the HD550, the most potentially significant differences found claiming a 30,000:1 contrast ratio to 50,000:1 ratio of the HD950, and a brightness of 1,000 lumens is actually a bit on the 900 lumens of the HD950.
Before you get too deflated by the fall nearly 50 percent, however asserted, however, it should be noted that the figures quoted contrast JVC are native, not dynamic. In other words, the HD550 can reach 30,000:1 completely stable and consistent, without having to use a reduced stability of automatic iris adjustment as most projectors do not rival. Which means it is probably still very powerful in the department of contrast despite lower contrast ratios measuring the HD950.
The native contrast ratio is possible due to the combination of JVC HD550 D-ILA chipset (a refinement of old technology of liquid crystal silicon) and the most important of all, JVC is relatively Wire Grid Optical Engine. We covered the engine in detail in our review of JVC HD1 projector back in 2007, we will not repeat it here except to say that obviously the HD550 uses a refined version of this engine.
