Nikon CoolPix S640 Digital Camera
January 25, 2010 | Digital Camera, Nikon | 3 CommentsThe CoolPix S640 is one of a series of recent compact cameras from Nikon with the same 12.2-megapixel sensor, but with a variety of configurations of the lens. It is in the range between 4x zoom S620 and S630 on 7x zoom.

The S640 is currently selling for about £ 190, putting him firmly in the “luxury” console, but that price does buy a good range of features including a 5x zoom lens equivalent to 28-140mm, a CCD 12.2 megapixels and a 2.7 inch 230k LCD monitor. It is with Lens-Shift Stabilization Optical Image always featureon unusual ultra compact cameras. The S640 is very small and lightweight, measuring only 91 x 55 x 20.5mm and weighing 135g insubstantial at full load. You can slip into a shirt pocket or purse and just know you’re focused on. However for such a small camera the S640 is very easy to use.
It is not as comfortable as the S630, but the buttons are fairly large and well spaced, and there is a small area of thumb grip on the back. The semi-matte finish is very adherent and the camera is easy to hold securely. As might be expected from well-respected name of Nikon, the network construction quality is excellent. The body is aluminum with plastic trim and controls are securely mounted and operate with a positive feeling of Nice. The LCD monitor is particularly good with a wide viewing angle in all directions and an anti-glare coating which means it is usable even in direct sunlight. I was a little worried when I noticed that the D-Pad doubles as a control rotary knob, because usually spells trouble on a compact, but the rotation function is used only for navigation menus and has no effect in shooting mode.
