Nikon S3 Simplified Nikkor 50mm f1.4 Lens Camera

The Nikon S3 is a simplified version of Nikon SP model lighthouse. Both are professional quality 35 mm rangefinder cameras used today as they were 40 years ago when they were introduced. S3 shares most parts of the SP with the notable exception of the viewfinder.

S3 viewfinder frame fixed lines with brands parallax for 35, 50 and 105 mm while the SP viewfinder lenses for 6 lenses from 28mm to 135mm. The SP has viewfinder frame lines masks for 50 to 135mm lenses. Movable masks because the lines move so that the objective is focused at different distances, the view through the viewfinder to adjust the parallax. In addition, the mask of mobile technology enables the SP to show that part of the lens used. This makes the viewfinder SP less crowded than on the S3. On the S3, frame lines for all three lenses are still visible.

A clear, precise viewfinder is a highly desirable camera. In this regard, the Nikon SP has few competitors. That said, why not create the Nikon S3? The Nikon SP viewfinder has been costly to manufacture. By creating what is essentially a SP but with a single researcher, may sell a Nikon camera quality for less money. The S3 has been identified as an ideal second body for owning a PC, and a camera quality for those who do not need one of the best sights available. In my opinion, the S3 viewfinder is excellent, though not as sophisticated as the SP’s. Only a small number of cameras can never compare to the Nikon SP.

Just over 14,000 S3 models were sold from 1958 through 1960 and more than 22,000 SP models were sold during a period a little longer. The Nikon S3 is a pleasure to use. It is a solid precision instrument with a good, solid film advance, which is capable of accepting an engine. He has a strong and accurate shutter and a clear, crisp, accurate view / rangefinder. The Nikkor lenses are sharp and contrasty.

This example is a little early, with the serial number 6302087 (numbers have been assigned from 6,300,000). Beginning cameras have been equipped with fabric focal plane shutter curtains, which example. Later, the cameras were sold with titanium curtains. Nippon KOGAKU conducted pioneering research in the use of titanium as construction material for the camera. Titanium curtains have been a great improvement over the fabric. Compared to the fabric, titanium is lighter, stronger, has greater dimensional stability (resulting in more accurate and reproducible exhibitions), is not subject to rot and not as likely to develop head ‘pin when the objective is oriented towards the sun.

Recognizing the Nikon S3 as a classic example of the time camera, Nippon KOGAKU is now the manufacture and sale of a slightly modified version of S3. This large model has been resurrected 40 years after the manufacture of the S series cameras has been abandoned.
