Onkyo HTX-22HD Surround Sound System
August 19, 2009 | Electronics | Comments OffLast month, I watched the Teufel Concept E400 speakers, offering a complete solution for surround sound on a budget. Today, I’m looking for a similar system of Onkyo. The Onkyo HTX-22HD is actually a 2.1-channel, but the optional pack SKS11 leads to full 5.1-channel status, and the two pieces of the puzzle are still at least £ 400.

The big difference between this system and the Onkyo Teufel, is that there is no need for a surround sound processor this time. Onkyo has developed a processor with plenty of functions in the active subwoofer. In fact, the connection options and codec support offered by Onkyo HTX22HD are more impressive than those seen on the station Decoder Teufel 5.
The big news is that the HTX-22HD is equipped to handle the latest surround sound formats without loss found on Blu-ray. It is not surprising that you’ll find HDMI 1.3 ports at the rear of the subwoofer – three to be exact, two inputs and one output. You also get two optical digital inputs and a coaxial, allowing you to connect up to five digital sources. Even if your device has an HDMI connectivity May you still need the optical input devices such as the Sky HD box and Xbox 360 are not output multi-channel audio over HDMI. You also get two sets of stereo inputs, if you wish to connect something without a digital audio output.

Thus, the HTX-22HD has the right connections to accommodate almost any codec surround sound, but how does its support list look? The answer to this question is simple – very good. The highlights are undoubtedly, Dolby TrueHD and DTS HD Master Audio, which means you’ll be able to enjoy the very best sound mixes on Blu-ray. And loss formats you also Dolby Digital Plus, Dolby Digital, DTS, DTS Surround Sensation, Dolby Pro Logic II and a plethora of DSP and other virtual surround modes.
If Onkyo is trying to convince the average consumer of the benefits of surround sound, it is necessary to make installation as simple as possible, and fortunately that is exactly what he did. I have never seen a speaker package which is so easy to install, and comes with just about anything you’re likely to need in the box. As the subwoofer and five satellites, you have a remote control with batteries, power cable, an optical digital audio cable and, more importantly, an HDMI cable. Of course, Onkyo is assumed that you already have HDMI cables from your source device, which is fair enough. [via trustedreviews]
