Sony Cyber-shot DSC-TX5 Compact Digital Camera

Waterproof, shockproof compact cameras have become very popular over the last two years, with several major manufacturers Fielding “robust” models in their ranges. I took a look at some of the most popular compact waterproof last year, and there are some other recent models that can be added to the list, such as the Casio EX-G1 Pentax W90 and I am hoping to meet soon.

While all these devices to meet their demands adventure to the test, most of them could hardly be described as attractive. Most waterproof cases are designed to look like military equipment, with an exposed bolt heads (often token), and aggressive lines of songs, no doubt to appeal to lovers of outdoor sports, which in the eyes camera designers are apparently all macho men with three days of stubble on his chin.

The problem is that even fans of strong sensations the most hard-core do not spend all day to throw off the mountains. Sometimes, they enjoy a night out, and maybe even a few clean shirts that are not made of neoprene or Gore-tex. For social occasions, they do not necessarily want to be toting a camera that looks like it fell off the back of a Land-Rover, if Sony has developed the TX5 Cyber-shot, 10 slides before ultra-compact – megapixel camera with a large touch screen monitor, Carl Zeiss 4x zoom. It is equally elegant and refined than any of the other models in the range Sony, but it is fully waterproof to a depth of three meters for a maximum of 60 minutes, shockproof against falls of up to 1 , 5 m on a hard surface, and freeze proof up to minus 10 degrees centigrade. The same degree of robustness that some of the most popular compact waterproof, such as the 3000 Olympus mju-Tough and 6010 or the new Panasonic FT10, and tougher than the WP Fujifilm Z33, may maybe it is the closest competitor in the “tough but elegant” issues.

The TX5 is really a very nice camera. It is not only smaller and lighter than other solid cameras, it is smaller and lighter than most other ultra-compact, measuring 94 x 56.9 x 17.7mm and weighing just 144g with battery memory card. The construction quality is of course fantastic, with a body that is a combination of aluminum and high strength plastic. Like most of Sony’s compact and is available in a variety of colors, including silver, pale green, pink, red or black (actually more of a slate gray) seen here. Unsurprisingly, not a cheap camera and is available directly on Sony’s website for a rather pricey £ 329, £ 40 more expensive than the TX1 with which it shares most of its features. Shopping around online, however, it is possible to find the TX5 for a much more reasonable £ 240. [via trustedreviews]
