Sony PRS-600 Format Support Reader Touch Edition

The PRS-600 looks very different to the previous eBook reader from Sony. While earlier models have more buttons than a king and queen pearl, it is a much more spartan with only five long, thin buttons aligned on the screen. Of course, this was made possible because of the nature of the touch screen, the user interface that relies heavily on touch input for navigation, which is no bad thing in our book (if I let the pun). The buttons may have largely disappeared, but fortunately, the excellent quality of construction remains.

As the PRS-505 PRS-600 is made from metal rather than plastic used by most of its rivals and as such feels much more solid. The design is also the best yet, as the buttons less equivalent to a sleeker look and more minimalist that really shows off the aluminum finish at its best. However, the metal frame is at the most weight heavier than competing devices like the Cybook Bookeen. Considering that the same size Cybook Gen3 weighs 174g, the Touch Edition is heavier at 286g and certainly feels more weight when you hold in your hands.

One criticism of the PRS-505 was Sony’s decision to move towards creating its own proprietary format for BBeB books purchased on the Web, but the PRS-600 is much broader format support. With BBeB, he also manages EPub and Adobe Digital Editions for purchases of digital books, along with other non-DRM formats like PDF, MS Word, RTF and TXT.

Getting books and other files on the drive is fairly simple. This is partly because the installation of the software is stored on the electronic book reader, whenever you connect to your PC Setup program launches automatically. This loads the eBook Library software that acts as a file manager for the device that lets you synchronize documents, notes and audio files back. The software also functions as a gateway to the online bookstore where you buy the securities business. Everything is fairly simple to use and the files are quick to sync via USB. The PRS-600 has 512 MB of onboard ROM and 380MB is left free to give space to store about 350 pounds. However, there are also slots for Memory Stick and SD cards, so it is easy to add extra storage if you feel the need. [via trustedreviews]
