Sony VAIO Z Mobile Workstation Notebook

    May 6, 2010 | Notebook, Sony | 1 Comment

Sony has never been afraid to defy the conventions of mobile computing. Sometimes this leads Silly it dead ends, but in the VAIO Z series audacity is correct. A 13.1in laptop, it weighs only 1.43 kg, has enough processing power to go feet-to-toe with any laptop desktop replacement and should last more than a few hours a single charge. It is, in other words, a true mobile workstation.

Not surprisingly, these pleasures are not cheap. Even in its cheapest form, which provides the integrated optical drive, you back a cool £ 1,350. Our opinion spec particular, however, costs an eye-watering £ 2,399! This is clearly a huge amount to ask for any type of machine, but a quick glance at the spec list says this astronomical prices.

Kicking off things is the Intel Core i7-620M, the two cores that run at 2.66 GHz and share a 4MB Cache. Like all Core i5 and i7 chips Intel Turbo Boost Technology, which in this case means it can operate at 3.33 GHz, up to a massive case of need. This is the fastest dual-core mobile chip Intel currently, and is supported by a huge 6 GB of DDR3 RAM and two 128GB SSD (256 GB total) configured as RAID 0 for maximum performance.

This is not the end of the extravagances, though. While the default display is a 13.1in, 1,600 x 900 Panel, our model has a screen of 1,920 x 1,080 native resolution. Add to this the cost of extras such as HSDPA modem to go with the Wireless-N Wi-Fi and Bluetooth or fingerprint reader and TPM (Trusted Platform Module) for added security, and the Z series comes packed with all the features imaginable possible.

There are more, too, as one of the main features of the Z series is switchable graphics. This means it can switch between the NVIDIA GeForce graphics powerful GT 330M 1GB dedicated, and the Intel integrated energy saving. This account if Sony is expected to result in up to 7.5 hours of battery life something that we test later. [via trustedreview]
