It is an old ball and chain mixed with modern technology that keeps you attached it to the timer to zero. The ball weighs 20.95 pounds a heavy which is not too heavy, but still would not be easy to transport over long periods of time if you had to crouch a bit.
What you do is set the amount of study time you have to do, attach it to your ankle and watch the clock count down. When it hits the zero shackle opens and you are free to leave.
