Toshiba Satellite L650-10G And Aspire 5553G-15.6 Inch Notebooks

At the back of reviewing two notebooks based on AMD 15.6in, the Acer Aspire 5551 and Aspire 5553G in the Toshiba Satellite L650 we’re back in more familiar territory – an Intel-powered portable identical proportions. Its price of £ 629, is asking in the middle of public, desktop replacement market, which requires good performance at an affordable price.

Without doubt, the L650 has the equipment for the job. Its Intel Core i5, with two cores running at 2.26 GHz, should provide sufficient performance for most users, as well as 4GB of RAM included. A 500GB hard drive is large, as well as the choice of an ATI Mobility Radeon 5145 graphics card (a small / mid-range chip) is unlikely to provide too many opportunities for games.

There are one or two disappointments in the specification, too, as the lack of Bluetooth and use the slow 10/100 Fast Ethernet standard. In the latter case you get Wireless-N Wi-Fi to compensate, but Gigabit Ethernet is so cheap, it seems stingy not to include it. We also take umbrage with a standard warranty from Toshiba, which is one year carry-in policy as opposed to the collection and return of service offered by most manufacturers. This means that you are responsible for sending your laptop to Toshiba in the result of the failure, and all liabilities that entails.

Toshiba is generally quite conservative in its laptop design, the L650 and continues his penchant for shiny black plastic feared. It is better treated than in the past, but with an attractive printed design that extends through the lid and the body of the machine. Above the keyboard, unlike the previous Toshiba laptops, retains a matte finish that does not result in greasy fingerprints or thoughts. There is nothing special in the design of the L650, but she has curves in all the right places and is generally well coordinated.

Toshiba famous build quality is also evident. There is nary a hint of evil panels fitted anywhere in the machine, while the plastics used are of extremely high quality. There is a robust quality to the L650 is rarely seen in notebooks at this price.

It also has a decent set of connections. Highlights include HDMI and USB / eSATA combo port, which are joined by VGA, two USB ports standard, Ethernet, two audio jacks (headphone 1x, 1x microphone) and a memory card reader which supports up 64GB SD cards. This is a standard, 8x loading tray DVD-burner on the right side, and a 0.3 megapixel webcam with microphone above the screen. [via trustedreviews]
