As portable computers gradually take over from desktops, “desktop replacements are becoming more popular. These big, heavy laptops have large screens, powerful sound systems, and a general trend towards packing each feature multimedia and entertainment possible. The largest of these to be found, yet generally come in at 18.4 inches, just like Toshiba Satellite P500-12D before us today.

Toshiba has a unique design ethics when it comes to laptops, whose most distinctive features are the first overall bright and striped pattern. It had a major overhaul of the boring, symmetrical stripes found on the Toshiba 18.4in previous machine we’ve reviewed (the Qosmio G50) and is now a pleasant mix of swooping lines. Unfortunately, this model does not prevent fingerprints from being horribly clear gloss on the cover, but then it is a criticism that can be launched in most consumer notebooks. Rather than design is the size of this giant will probably impress you most though. At 41.5mm thick and with a weight of 3.93 kg is one notebook that pushes the limits of mobility.

Above the keyboard lie the impressive-looking speakers (we’ll see their performance in a bit), with chrome surrounds matching chrome touchpad buttons well. Thank you to the P500-12D generous dimensions, Toshiba has found plenty of space to integrate the power button and a set of touch controls to the left of the keyboard. Firstly, we have an Eco-mode button, which, as you guessed it reduces energy consumption. Next up are the media and volume controls, which are sensitive and provide a beep loudly when pressed, but fortunately this can be disabled. They are all nicely backlit in white, as is the power button, Satellite logo and a small band above the touchpad (although, unfortunately, the keyboard is not) – very useful for finding in the dark.
