    TVonics MDR-240 Home Cinema Player

UK-maker TVonics has a wide range of DTT receivers for this purpose, the latest is the MDR-240. This model provides not only digital TV for free, but it is also one of the first to meet the government ‘Core Receiver Requirements’ which ensures equipment is designed to “vulnerable” users, such as the elderly or persons with disabilities (the complete list of these requirements can be found here.

Unfortunately, these requirements said nothing about how the receiver should look, otherwise TVonics would have made more effort. The MDR-240 is a bit dull black box, with a plasticky finish and eye-no embellishments to talk about the capture (outside of energy green / red LED). We know that it is designed to be functional DVB-T receiver and not a work of art, but a little more spice would not have gone wrong – after all, TVonics has launched some products of very good looking in the past.

On the positive side, it is surprisingly compact (196 x 89 x 31mm) which means it can be easily hidden under your TV without needing a major overhaul. On the back is a basic range of connections, making it more responsive to simple systems. There are two SCART outputs, including RGB, S-Video or composite video to one device (probably the TV) and another that outputs only composite. This second SCART is intended to be connected to a recorder, but like most DVD recorders and hard disk support RGB, the image quality of your recordings can appear quite poor if you use this Release. The Core Receiver Requirements list RGB from the SCART second option, but TVonics decided otherwise. Shame. [via trustedreviews]
